The Old Westbury Gardens feature a Charles II-style mansion that is encircled by an extensive 200 acres of splendid formal gardens, exquisite woodlands, beautifully manicured lawns, spectacularly landscaped grounds, clean ponds, and numerous lakes. This huge estate was built for John S. Philips back in 1906, having been designed by George A Crawley, a famous and well respected architect of the era. In its fifty years as the John Phillip’s permanent residence, the Westbury House accumulated tons of original fine English art work and antiques.
The Westbury Gardens in the County of Nassau, NY, remains open to guests all year round. There are professional guides who see to it that visitors get a well-deserved and highly educative tour of the luxurious mansion as well as its classic formal gardens. Work on the deluxe mansion commenced in 1903, when John S. Philips made a promise to Margarita Grace, his fiancé, that he would build her a home in the US, similar to her family’s family home back in England. Margarita was the daughter to a famous and highly prestigious East Sussex based entrepreneur, Michael P Grace. By the year 1906, the house was ready for occupation for the Philips family.
Westbury House, the Charles II Style Carolean Revival mansion designed George A. Crawley, a British designer who was assisted by American architect Grosvenor Atterbury, features 23 rooms. The mansion’s grounds stretch across 160 acres. As you get to head to the dining room, you will be greeted by a stunning painting by John Singer Sargent captioning Mrs. Henry Phipps together with her Grandson Winston.
Old Westbury Gardens is a one of the most popular wedding venues in Long Island. You can even get to hear about the wedding experience in an array of songs from Marcuss & Passio, all which dive into the special architecture here. This venue is so stunning, that scenes of its driveways as well as ground floor have even in a couple of movies, with the number one movie on the list being the 1970 ‘Love Story’.
